Wings to Fly 02:45
She has wings to fly She has wings to fly now She has wings to fly And they’ll carry her home Had she wanted nothing Had she wanted nothing more Than a place to land And a pedestal to stand Bury her with diamond rings Bury her with diamond rings now Bury her with diamond rings From her lovers of old Remember her standing there With the golden flowers in her hair Oh how right it seemed When you were in her company How do you recall If you ever had it all? When it’s dark she’s never there But you feel her in the air You feel her all around She has wings to fly She has wings to fly now She has wings to fly And they’ll carry her home Had she wanted nothing Had she wanted nothing more Than a place to land And a pedestal to stand

Weathered to the bone Rough and calloused skin Do you ever take a moment To bring up what’s within Fields of green and clover Tilled and then mowed over Ready to break down again and again Oh the tastes so sweet, Beds of coreopsis and butterfly weed Borders to grow, to sow And the bees will dance their way Into my grain How can I listen To the way the wind does blow Through the air In the summertime Sweat beating down my back My hair to curls as the sun refracts From the vacuum, To the sky, To the clouds And the fields all around me Growing up the plains Settled down in my chair The fog comes in, Then sky turns bare Blue, all above me How can I listen To the way the wind does blow Through the air In the summertime How can I remember That the leaves will turn to brown But grow anew In the summertime

Pretty Boy 05:24
Cold and damned Is not much better than, Not much better than He Wise, unruly eyes Do they see better than, They see better than He Inside his crooked shed See his delirium See his delirium Wed To his heavy bones White as the overhead Lights above his thrown Dripping off his bed You held his hands and plead The morning when he … See his chest rising Does he want to go home? You can’t ask him But it’s rising, Does he want to go alone? Down, pretty boy Rolling out his carpet new He knew, even then He told you ‘Honey, I’m no better than them, Just a mind and a friend My eyes see dreams, My skin has bled, Thin as cellophane, Thin as cellophane So spread me out across the streets From way up high My arms and legs And speech And when I die And when I …’

Eyes of Blue 03:53
I wait by the door With bated breath I pour for you These frozen eyes of blue And the wind above me sings Misery will build your wings for you These frozen eyes of blue And my shivering form will wait for you In the light of the dark it shines anew And the willow it bursts with green A sight I had never seen And the heart it brings us what we know is true And a lover who instead Finds space to rest your head a few These frozen eyes of blue And sweeter is the rose When cut amongst the throes, in ruins These frozen eyes of blue And my shivering form will wait for you In the light of the dark it shines anew And the willow it bursts with green A sight I had never seen And the heart it brings us what we know is true

Mercy 03:35
Mary may you never cry for me You've got a whole lot of baggage babe And nothing you can see Mary may your heart stop beating so hard You've got a whole lot of love to give And none of it is wrong And if you're crying, what a crying shame And if you're crying, it don't seem quite like pain Mercy may your life last pretty long You've got a whole lot of thinking to do Before your body's gone Mercy may the woods heal your faith You've got a whole lot of playing to do And nothing is a waste

I hope it's better for the daughters I hope a light will guide them through Every dark and sordid hour Even if those prairies can't bloom I have a distaste for anticipation It makes me squeal and cry and curl So let's go on a little vacation When we get back we can see the world And what it has become Ask your mother to tell you any different How she loved you through and through And at another time She had a choice to draw the line Goodbye, she had to do Goodbye, felt through and through It's not some shallow reservation To not scream and shout atop the world I'm full and love and creation But what I see is just making me full of, full of ... I hope it's better for the daughters I hope a light will guide them through Every dark and sordid hour Even if those prairies can't bloom

about

This album is a weaving of old and new, a forging of new friendships with a respect and love given to old, deep relationships--family, friends, songs--that have built me into the person I am today. It is a raw look into the beauty and loss that surrounds us; seeds and weeds hidden beneath the snow, waiting for the spring thaw.

I want to thank all of the people that so graciously offered to play on each track and/or offer their advice and insight. Each song has a different combination of local musicians who are also dear friends. I gave loose arrangements for each song, wanting to see how each would unfold in the moment. It is hopefully an enjoyable listening journey and insight into the community and environment that I value so deeply.
